Life: Vikki Pink on being your best in challenging times

Vikki Pink, Chief People Officer
Melbourne, Australia

Growing up in New Zealand and living in a number of countries, Vikki Pink feels fortunate to have worked in a range of industries. “I really enjoyed the market environment and challenge of providing critical resources and support to better people’s lives.” When the opportunity arose to work at Worley, Vikki dived right in. “This industry is so important to people’s daily lives, and I saw the opportunity to be part of a team providing innovative, resourceful solutions.” That team is important to her, too. “We face into some of the world’s biggest problems every day. This industry is full of good people with purpose, integrity and commitment.”

Across countries and industries

Vikki’s diverse experiences include working in energy, resources, industrials, agribusiness, professional services and education. “My career has been a great adventure.” It’s also provided the opportunity to live and work in Australia, New Zealand, the US and UK, which has given her unique perspectives about people. “It made me realize how small the world is, how similar our values are as people, and how wonderful, and to be celebrated, our differences are.” She enjoys leading teams that help set the direction of the business. “The challenges of the people agenda, culture, inclusion, risk and large-scale transformation – I enjoy it all.” But the role can be demanding, requiring support. “My family, friends and health are key priorities and it is with those in balance that I know I am at my best.”

Resilience and seeking support

Challenges in life, Vikki believes, are universal. “Everyone faces them over the course of their lives, whether that be personal or professional.” She tries to face them with resilience, determination and grit. “In the past few years, I’ve focused on strengthening the behaviors of resilience: rest, sleep, nutrition, family, friends, balance.” But she recognizes life isn’t easy on occasion. “When things seem tough, I ask for help from those around me, seek counsel from those I trust and take time to get to the right decision.” A trusted mentor once told her you don’t need to make all decisions today, which is some of the best advice she’s received and is now part of her everyday practice.

Balancing leadership and lifelong learning

There are many aspects of Vikki’s career that make her proud. “Leadership is a privilege that makes a true difference in people's everyday lives.” But what she’s most proud of is finding balance, which isn’t easy. “Valuing family, friends, wellbeing, and contributing to my community energizes me.” Although she knows she doesn’t always get it right. “But I am my best when I have balance in place.”

When it comes to advice for others, Vikki believes in lifelong learning. “Never think you know all the answers and always be open to considering different ways of thinking and changing your mind.” And for women pursuing roles in leadership, she encourages them to be true to themselves and embrace their strengths. “Build and maintain connections with good people who will support and challenge you.” She advises them that whatever role they’re in now, make sure the right people know what your career plans are. “Owning and driving your own career is so important for each of us to achieve what is possible.”
