Life’s journey starts with learning

After graduating, she was offered a role in the USA. It was her first job and the first time she’d ever been overseas. “Adapting to a new country, a new language and being far from family was hard.” But the experiences she gained in those early years strengthened her resilience and determination to succeed.

After five years, Carmen returned to Spain and joined Jacobs, later Worley Consulting. Over her 21-year career she’s advanced from junior engineer to her current role of Vice President. She thrives in the dynamic and collaborative world of consulting. “Working with people from many different countries, cultures and backgrounds, makes almost every day feel different.”

Lean in and lead

Education is important to Carmen. With English a second language, in the early days of her career it would sometimes hold her back from participating in discussions. But in her mind, challenges are something to relish. “I always see them as opportunities to learn and grow. The first step – face into them.” Then, despite holding a master’s degree in civil engineering, Carmen recognized a gap in her business management expertise and enrolled in Business School. This helped her gain knowledge and confidence and encouraged her to put her hand up for senior roles.

Now as a leader, Carmen values the diversity of thought her team brings, recognizing they’re stronger together. “Without them I would not have achieved what I have.”  She believes success is amplified by fostering collaboration and empowering others, a philosophy that has shaped her leadership style.

Be true to yourself

Balancing her professional career with her personal life is something Carmen is proud of. Creating an environment where both parents can thrive equally in their careers was an important example she wanted to set for her son. “I needed to approach parenting and work-life balance so I could prioritize without guilt when needed, seek support when needed, and manage all of my commitments.”

Carmen’s advice for others? “Be curious. Don’t be afraid to embrace challenges, explore opportunities, and avoid confining yourself to specific roles.” Carmen also stresses the importance of owning your journey and helping others along the way. She champions diversity grounded in meritocracy, believing that everyone deserves a fair chance to shine.

For women aspiring to leadership positions, Carmen offers powerful encouragement. She sees diversity in leadership not as a luxury but as a necessity for success. “Women can bring powerful perspectives about resilience, empathy and strategic insight.” Her message is clear: raise your hand, speak up, and drive change. Leadership is about action, not perfection, and confidence grows through experience. “Lead your journey with purpose and inspire others to do the same.”

Carmen’s career highlights the power of perseverance, learning, and leading with integrity. “I hope in some way my story can help others achieve their dreams.”
