Headshot of Gavin Johnson of Worley.

Gavin Johnson’s career is grounded in hands-on experience. Currently based in Aberdeen, Scotland, Gavin started as an apprentice electrician, building his expertise on sites across heavy industry, mining, petrochemicals  and offshore energy. Those practical foundations shaped a career that has taken him across regions, projects and delivery models. And now, into his role as Director of Construction supporting projects across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Gavin’s background defines how he approaches his work. Understanding what it takes to build safely, efficiently and predictably in the field informs every decision he makes from early planning to execution and handover.

“I’m really proud of the path I’ve taken, from being an electrician in the field through to supporting projects globally. That experience is what helps me add value today.”

Turning complexity into clarity

Some of the most challenging projects Gavin supports are complex long before construction begins. His focus is on helping teams set themselves up for success early. Aligning engineering, supply chain, construction and commissioning, so decisions are made with delivery front of mind.

By bringing construction thinking into the earliest phases, teams can simplify complexity before it reaches site. Clear sequencing, consistent processes and integrated digital tools help remove uncertainty and create a shared understanding of how work will be delivered across the full project lifecycle.

“If you bring construction thinking in early and align everyone around the same objective, you make better decisions all the way through the project.”

Strength through global connection

For Gavin, working across regions has reinforced the value of being part of a globally connected team. When challenges emerge, he and his team can draw on experience from colleagues around the world.

Whether sharing lessons learned, applying proven approaches or adapting ideas to local conditions, Gavin sees our global connection bringing consistency and flexibility to projects, creating stronger outcomes for both customers and teams.

“Being part of a globally connected team means you’re never solving problems alone. There’s always someone who’s been there before and is willing to help.”

Creating outcomes that endure

The projects that resonate most with Gavin deliver beyond construction. From offshore modifications that extend asset life to first-of-a-kind decarbonization projects, the focus is always on outcomes that stand the test of time.

These projects take creativity, collaboration and discipline. Combining engineering excellence with strong execution to create long term benefits for customers, communities and future teams.

“When a project delivers more life, more opportunity and better outcomes than expected; that’s incredibly rewarding.”

Learning, growing and paying it forward

Working overseas, taking on new responsibilities and learning from different environments have all contributed to Gavin’s development. And he’s passionate about creating similar opportunities for others. Encouraging people to build experience gradually, seek exposure to different projects and learn from those around them.

“You grow most when you put yourself in unfamiliar situations, and there’s always someone at Worley who’ll support you along the way.”

That statement rings true in a few ways for Gavin. After many years in the team, Gavin made the decision to step away from the business to test himself and gain perspective elsewhere. That time away proved valuable, reinforcing his belief in our direction. So, when a colleague reached out with the opportunity to return, it felt like the right move.

“The way that Worley works is over and above, I think, of where our competitors are. And I wanted to be part of where we’re going.”

Building for the future

What excites Gavin most going forward is how project delivery continues to evolve. The opportunity to combine consistent global approaches with advanced digital capability is changing how teams plan, build and move between projects.

It’s about continuing to turn ideas into reality; ensuring every project is designed, planned and built with care, intent and a clear focus on delivery.

“We’re changing how we deliver, and being part of that shift, helping turn ideas into real, built outcomes, is what motivates me every day.”
