Uniper names Worley as preferred EPC contractor for its proposed new power station at Connah’s Quay in UK
Worley has been selected as the preferred Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) supplier for the planned new Connah’s Quay Low Carbon Power (CQLCP) project in Deeside, in the United Kingdom.
Worley was one of two contractors selected in December 2024 to design and submit plans for the site as part of the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) competition. If consented and developed, the new power station would be fitted with carbon capture technology to capture at least 95% of its CO2 emissions.
Uniper made the announcement today, 23 July, following conclusion of the FEED competition, which started in December 2024.
This is the next step in the potential development of CQLCP which, if consented and developed, would be constructed on land next to Uniper’s existing power station. A Development Consent Order (DCO) application was submitted by Uniper in August 2025, with the decision expected in the coming months.
The proposed new power station would connect into nearby CO2 transport and storage infrastructure as part of the HyNet industrial cluster, enabling the captured CO2 to be transported to permanent offshore storage facilities in repurposed depleted offshore gas fields. The first phase of the project could be operational from 2030.

Uniper is working towards a potential capacity of up to a maximum of 1.38GW* low-carbon power, developed in two phases. From completion of phase one, the project could supply enough electricity to power the equivalent of around 1.1 million homes a year. Phase one could potentially be operational from 2030.
* Once fully developed, a 1.38GW power station could supply enough low carbon electricity to power up to 3.4 million homes a year or the equivalent of 86% of the average annualized power demand for Wales. The comparison to the average annual power demand for Wales is simply to give a feel for the contribution the low carbon power station would provide.
