Delivering a full lineup of integrated gas treatment and Sulphur Recovery Units in Oman

Worley Comprimo, in partnership with BASF, has been awarded a contract to deliver the engineering and licensing of integrated gas treatment technology and Sulphur Recovery Units (SRU) for the Budour Tayseer Gas Project (BTGP) in Oman.

This project has the capacity to produce 2 million standard cubic meters (MMSm³) per day of sweet gas, 950 cubic meters (m³) per day of condensate, and 80 tons of sulphur pellets per day. It aims to provide Oman with a steady and reliable supply of gas under a design-build-own-operate-maintain (DBOOM) framework to reinforce the country’s energy infrastructure and support in‑country value.

SPETCO provides engineering, production, and gas processing solutions in the oil and gas sector across the region and has signed an agreement to develop BTGP.

Worley Comprimo is delivering an integrated gas treating and sulphur recovery scope under a single licensor model. The scope of this award includes a full lineup of critical units, including:

  • Acid Gas Removal Unit (AGRU)
  • Adsorption Unit (AU)
  • Sulphur Recovery Unit (SRU)
  • Tail Gas Treatment Unit (TGTU)
  • Sulphur Degassing.

“Our combined engineering, licensing and execution expertise allowed us to create a seamless one-stop solution that simplifies complexity for our customers,” says Henri Willigenburg, Senior Manager, Business Development, Worley Comprimo. “This award reflects Worley’s ability to bring together specialist technology, integrated teams and global experience to deliver and optimize complex gas processing solutions.”

By integrating specialist gas treating and sulphur recovery teams, the project achieves efficient engineering schedules and seamless execution than projects where the AGRU and SRU are tendered separately.

The project also reinforces Worley’s long‑standing collaboration with BASF. BTGP will utilize BASF’s OASE® purple M and Durasorb® Adsorbent technology for which Worley Comprimo is an authorized licensor. BASF’s OASE purple M hybrid solvent technology extends the established OASE gas treatment portfolio for deep acid gas removal and selective H2S removal. Building on BASF’s experience from more than 500 OASE installations, the hybrid solvent concept combines proprietary solvent formulations with advanced, rate‑based design and simulation. Following the OASE purple M unit, the Durasorb Adsorption Unit further polishes the gas by removing water and mercaptans to low concentration levels with a closed loop and eliminates the need for spent regeneration gas treatment. Both technologies combined provide CAPEX and OPEX efficient removal of sulphur species (mercaptan (RSH) and carbonyl sulfide (COS) removal) at low hydrocarbon co-absorption rates.

“This strategic project win in Oman marks an important milestone for BASF, reinforcing our valued long-term partnership with Worley and SPETCO and highlighting our commitment to strengthening energy security through innovative, high performance gas treatment technologies that enable our shared customers growth,” adds Ashraf Abufaris, Head of Gas Treatment Middle East and Central Asia, BASF.

This award reflects Worley’s ability to bring together specialist technology, integrated teams, and global experience to deliver complex gas processing solutions. It also demonstrates to the market the level of optimization that can be achieved when critical acid gas removal, treatment, and sulphur recovery units are integrated.
