Bringing the right expertise to every challenge

There has never been a more exciting time to be in the upstream, midstream and LNG business, with rising demand and no shortage of exciting projects to be part of.

Headshot of Peter Cox of Worley.

For more than 35 years, Peter has built a career around solving complex energy challenges. From refineries and offshore platforms to major pipeline networks and liquefied natural gas (LNG) developments, he’s seen the industry evolve first-hand while continuing to embrace new opportunities along the way.

His career began at a refinery, where he designed projects, managed construction and worked closely with operations teams.

“It was the best experience I could have had as a graduate,” Peter reflects. “You’d design something, see it built and then get direct feedback from the people operating it.” That early exposure to every stage of project delivery shaped the practical, execution-led approach he brings to his work today.

After joining Worley, Peter became a specialist in integrating gas lift compressors onto offshore platforms that were never designed to accommodate them. His expertise in compression systems led him into pipelines, project management and leadership roles. Since then, he has led our global pipelines business, held hydrocarbon general management and sales leadership positions and now serves as Global Sector Lead and Vice President, Onshore Upstream, Midstream and LNG based in Brisbane, Australia.

Unlocking expertise across our business

Today, Peter’s focus is helping grow our business across the sector through strategy, major pursuits, customer relationships and strategic partnerships. Just as importantly, he helps bring together the right expertise from across our global business. “What I enjoy most is discovering the depth of specialist talent we have across Worley and making sure we’re bringing that expertise to our customers.”

As demand for energy infrastructure continues to grow, collaboration has never been more important. Peter sees one of his biggest challenges as ensuring teams around the world work together seamlessly to deliver for customers, across every stage of delivery.

“Our opportunities continue to grow. To meet that demand, we need to think globally, share work across regions and draw on all the capability we have across Worley.”

Delivering when it matters most

One project that stands out came when Melbourne, Australia’s gas supply was unexpectedly disrupted, and an alternative supply route was urgently required. Peter received a call asking whether Worley could help.

Within two weeks, the team delivered a temporary compressor station. Three permanent compressor stations followed within six months, with compressors and turbines flown into Australia aboard Antonov cargo aircraft to meet the schedule. For Peter, the project embodied the entrepreneurial spirit that continues to define Worley.

“We took on an incredibly difficult challenge, brought together the right people and found a way to deliver.”

The project demonstrated what can happen when the right expertise comes together around one delivery outcome. It’s this culture that has kept him engaged throughout his career. “I’ve spent 35 years at Worley because life is never boring. I’m constantly learning, working with highly motivated people and tackling challenges that are different every day.”

Finding a practical path forward

Looking ahead, Peter believes energy security and geopolitical uncertainty will remain defining issues for the industry. At the same time, customers continue to balance the need for affordable, reliable energy with the transition to a lower‑carbon future.

“Our projects are helping address some of the world’s most important challenges by providing the energy people depend on while supporting progress toward a more sustainable world.”

Over the next decade, Peter expects the industry to move beyond the debate of one priority versus another. “Today, the pendulum tends to swing between addressing climate change and providing reliable, affordable energy. I believe we’ll find the right balance and establish a practical path forward that achieves both.”

For Peter, that’s what makes the future so compelling. The challenges are significant, the opportunities are vast and there is still no shortage of meaningful work to be done.
