VP Mining, Minerals and Metals, US Operations

“We know that if we develop energy infrastructure the way we always have, we won't get to net zero by 2050. We might not even get halfway. The way we partner and collaborate with our customers plays a vital role in that.”

David Swisher of Worley.

David leads our mining, minerals and metals group in the United States.

Based in Phoenix, he’s using his previous experience in underground and surface mining operations to transform the way we partner with our customers.

“I’ve worked in the mining industry for 30 years, with 26 of these spent developing, building and operating mining projects, in the Americas, on the owner’s side. Now, I’m helping our teams understand what our customers expect from us and what we expect from them,” he says.

“This means shifting the nature of how we do business. We want to create a real partnership approach to the way we work. Part of that is challenging our teams to be more proactive in the way they collaborate and communicate with our customers.

“We know that if we develop energy infrastructure the way we always have, we won't get to net zero by 2050. We might not even get halfway. The way we partner and collaborate with our customers plays a vital role in that.”

Partnering with our customers to meet future copper demand

Copper is front and center of the energy transition. As a key part of wind turbines, batteries and solar panels, copper demand is set to double in the next 20 years.

“Global copper demand isn’t slowing down,” explains David. “Because of this, we must ensure that as a business we’re prepared to meet the needs of our customers. We’re pulling from the same – and very limited – resource pool so we must be creative in how we attract the best people to deliver projects and support the growing copper industry.

“We’re committed to creating the right environment to both attract and retain the critical capabilities we need to build our competitive advantage, make our business stronger and grow faster,” he adds.

“Reskilling our people through digital learning platforms and leveraging transferable skills to support the transition of our workforce is key to this. So, we can continue to support and deliver projects for our customers now, and in the future.”
